As outlined in A Fun History of Panettone, this sweet bread delicacy has been a traditional seasonal staple in Italy for a long time, and has spread around the globe as well. While an enjoyable treat in any occasion at any time of the year, panettone’s tradition is strongly ingrained in Christmas. As yeast was considered a luxury item many centuries ago, it was in periods of religious festivity when the people would choose to share this treat with others.
Today, the traditions continue and panettone is one of the most circulated gifts in Italy during the Christmas holidays. Around the rest of world, it has become a very popular general holiday gift, an extremely popular corporate gift, and something of a “fashionable” gift between foodies always looking for the latest variety.
